Blog advice

Postby SILV3R on Mon Feb 23, 2009 11:02 pm

I'm thinking of starting up a blog. mainly, as with many people, to work as a link/thought dump. partly in the hope of entertaining anyone who happens to read it.

i have, however, got no experience in the field. i'm not looking for advice on content as such, but on the facilities available to me to make it work.

i know people with wordpress accounts and i read a whole host of professional blogs, but i have no idea how best to go about setting one up.

i want to be able to post text, include hyperlinks and embed video. i'd quite like my twitter account to be fed through automatically as well, but only as a sidebar ideally.

there's probably also a boat load of things i'd like it to do that i haven't thought of yet, so i'm guessing something a bit versatile or SILV3Rproof would be handy.

advise me.

you could try blogger.com

i think its a fairly straightforward, but customisable pplatform. i started a blog using it yonks ago which lasted all of about 3 days. or wordpress as you say, but i have even less knowledge of that than i do blogger.com
a classier kind of crazy

There's two flavours of WordPress - wordpress.com which will host your site, is ad-supported, and has limited functionality for add-on features, and wordpress.org, which is free (but you have to provide the hosting) and you have all of the add-on features available to you.

I use Tsohost for my hosting, and they (like a lot of others as I understand it) have the complicated technical gubbins at the back end that I don't need to understand which make adding wordpress really easy.

i had most definitely considered pestering him. but i can't help feeling he will use it as another distraction from doing the things he's paid to do.

there is a distinct possiblity i will become one of his tweet complaints.
